I'm 99% certain that this was originally done for Disney. I remember hearing this in Epcot when I was wee little one. Figure mid to late eighties.

monk, you are correct that you heard this at Walt Disney World. But it was not at Epcot. It was, and still is at The Disney - MGM Studios. The park is now called Disney's Hollywood Studios, but "The Haircut" is still there. It is actually in the area at the exit of the Sounds Dangerous attraction. Which is another binaural audio experience, with some video. It stars Drew Carrey. I'm not sure who the original creator of "The Haircut" is, but it sure is a neat thing to do if you've never done it before.
The virtual haircut really was quite alarming, thanks. But NO THANKS. Having just removed my fairly large headphones and seen myself in the bathroom mirror, my hair looks a terrible mess.
Suppose I'll have to go back for another one now.
