A few weeks ago I created a Randolink which is basically a matrix of dots with each dot being linked to a website. The idea was to create a completely equal link exchange, you could request a link for free, and if you were really nice you would link back. It was in the users interest to link back because as time progressed the randolink page would get enough link backs to (probably) be indexed by Google with a reasonable page rank. This meant that in the future you would have a free back-link from a high PR page. Randolink was an OK idea but suffered from waiting for people to request backlinks and vice versa which was a slow link exchange. This got me thinking and I have came up with a Randolink/LinkTrain mongrel, if you take part you WILL get lots of backlinks! I present to you Viralink (yes its cheesy but descriptive!)
UPDATE 31st May: Important!
First of all let me thank everyone who has taken part, in a little over a week Viralink has had phenomenal success and trust this has been working for everyone! I've just had an email from Steve and noticed that many people who have found Viralink are bypassing the blog they have found it from and copying it direct from here. There is nothing wrong with this but somewhat detracts from the viral effect and limits the lifespan of Viralink, to keep this project healthy and moving it's better to copy the grid from wherever you found it, no matter where you are in the chain you will build links. This does take a little self promotion to get major results but for the little effort it takes to send the message out to your blogging partners the rewards are worth it!
Pleash keep Viralink going by coping from whoever told you about it and we will have a healthy viral community for some time yet!

ANOTHER UPDATE 5th June: Important!
From today for the next 7 daysI have decided not to give out any links. Allot of people are still linking from this Viralink, to make this successful and gain more links it is better to link from someone else's Viralink which is not as full. If you have found Viralink via this site and would like to link please click a star on the grid, see where you end up and link from that grid. This helps continue the viral effect and the lifespan of this project.

How It Works
Just so it is easier to see how this actually works, below is an example of the linking tree. If 3 people copied the above grid into their own browser, added their link and 3 other people copied from them these are the number of backlinks which would be received witht he centre light green circle being this page.
And if the procedure was repeated and each new person told 3 of their friends, the back links travel back to the source they were added!
And once again as word gets around and the link tree develops the number of backlinks grows greatly! So at this stage my blog would have 93 backlinks from only 4 levels of "saturation" and by level 5 your blog will also have 93 backlinks if you decide to take part.
Here are how the numbers add up, I will use the term saturation to describe the spread of the Viralink with Zero being your blog 1 being 1 link down, 2 being 2 links down and so on.

The above numbers rely on 3 people copying and pasting the Viralink onto their blog and that being replicated 3 times continuously 10 times. I think you will agree that the numbers are quite staggering, there are 119 spaces left on the Viralink from this page and I expect that there will be allot of clones which begin to pop up. The best strategy with this is to start early and tell all of your blog partners!
You may be wondering what happens if you are at the end of the chain when the Viralink is full ? What would be the benefit to me? Well there is no reason why you cant add another line of dots to the bottom and keep the process going, or even start another form scratch.

Hi Louiss, Google will still recognise it as a link and it will count towards PR even without anchor text. I have omitted the anchor text idea firstly to make it an equal playing field, and number two, to keep it compact.
Yes it is one way, but there's no reason why in the future i cant accept the same Viralink grid back once it is full and publish it on my blog, turning it into a mutual link for all who have taken part!

Hi, about ping-backs, I'm not sure how it will work on your platform but with word press you will get an email telling you that someone has linked to your site!
If you want to add text links to the Viralink just copy and past it and add what you like, its good to evolve!!
Maybe you can implement it on your site and see how it evolves from there!

Hi Founders, I've tried the copy and paste on wordpress, blogger, and pasting it into an ordinary word document and it does retain the URL and color code when copied. What platform are you using? Ill need to investigate.

I use wordpress and it did not copy over the URL and color code. It does copy over to a .doc document though. It needs to work with wordpress, typepad, and blogger if it is to be successful. Unless I am not copying and pasting it right?
mmmm, interesting! Ive tried it with internet explorere and firefox on blogger wordpress and a .doc document and it copies the underlying code for me. All im doing is selecting the text, Copy {ctrl c} and paste {ctrl v}, im not sure why it wouldnt paste. I think we need another independant trial!

I was about to copy it on a post, but unfortunately I noticed (as Founder.. said) that it doesn't work with Wordpress.
Note that a lot of wordpress users, doesn't use the Wysiwyg editor, that's why the stars aren't copied. You need to create some stars generator, IMHO.

So many people are finding out about Viralink from one source, and then coming to your page to read about it and copy. If this continues, your grid will be full very quickly and the whole experiment will have been limited to the first 120 who joined.
You should encourage those who want to join to copy from the page they originally found Viralink so that the whole pyramid effect works.
Many who join, automatically write to all the others on your grid to ask them to link, and that isn't the point.
It's fine that they mention Andy-Coates.com as the originator in their posts, it's a fabulous idea and you deserve all the credit, but they really need to link from their original source also.
I've passed the idea to quite a few bloggers, and they've all come here and copied your grid, later asking me to link them.
If people don't understand the pyramid effect, then it will become a useful tool for 120 links, and then die, and I'm sure you'll agree that would be a shame.
I suggest you make a post to clarify. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks for that Steve, Just added a notice to the post. I had a massive surge in traffic checking yeasterdays stats and put it down to people bypassing the downline of the viralink and copying directly from here. There are over 400million bloggers in the world, many im assuming! who havent heard of viralink, so its better to copy from the person you heard from than copy from here. This will ensure a better "Spread" and work out better for everyone!
I have also noticed a few people who have been commneting on all the other viralinks wanting to be added and yes this limit the life and spread of Viralink. Its better to copy from one person, reveive your reciprocal link and promote your own Viralink. As I mentioned a tiny bit of self promtion of your own viralink will get you massive results!

I was confused as to how the initial 120 stars would eventually become 120 million stars. It would then be a very long post and all the links from Star 1 would be mutual.
Since this is a networking concept, it should be that each blogger will have different sets of networks consisting of 120 stars. Am I right?

But my view is even if copy paste is done for update of links
(blogger user) , it does not harm and everybody gets reciprocal
link for the links he has on viralink.
Wordpress users are getting ping/email as soon as somebody
adds link of their site.so they have to update viralink accordingly.
In case of the pyramid structure what they are talking about, everybody will not have one to one reciprocal link. And everybody is looking for link from better PR ranking site.

Hi Umesh, you gice the person who copys directly from you the reciprocal link. i.e 1 < --reciprocal--> 2, and 2 < --reciprocal--> 3.
When you get the pingback just check to see if the viralink is the same as yours, if it is they have copued directly, if not then its someone elses referal.
If evryone just decides to email eveyone with a viralink thenit limits the linking to 102 instead of potentially 1,000's. Thats much better for pr!

Hi Kassper and BloggerTrip, Ive added links seeing as you got the viralink from here. As far as adding anchor text, this would defeat the whole "Even field" simplicity of the viralink. This works because it is simple and no one has more prescience than anyone else.
Now you have the viralink on your site tell everyone else you know about it and you will be amazed at the results!

All of my stars are filled! I have received approximately 117 backlinks (I have 141 total) from the Viral Link so far and it's only been like 1 1/2 weeks. My Technorati ranking is sky high right now it has dropped from around 250K to 39,305 with a Technorati authority of 117 which was previously 24 before I caught the Virus. I can't wait to see how this effects my Google PR!

Yeah, it's really helpful. My authority just keeps on increasing everyday.
