Tailor your internal linking structure for the next Pagerank Update!

Google calculates page rank constantly but only updates the actual figure you see for you blog every few month, with a few simple techniques you can help "tweak" your internal links and hopefully give your self just a little more PR power! It is well documented that PR (page rank) is calculated on the number of inbound links any particular PAGE receives, yes it is calculated per page not for the overall site.

Which links are best?

Not only do the number of incoming links count toward your pages PR but also the PR of the site which the incoming link is coming from. Receiving a link from a page of PR5 is worth much more to you than receiving a link from a page of PR1. If you think of PR as authority of a page and an incoming link as a vote, you will get a more substantial "vote" from a higher authority than a lower authority.

Another thing which affects the amount of PR you receive (or the quality of the vote!) is the amount of other links on the page which you are getting linked from. If your page is the only age to get linked to then you will get 100% of the "vote", but if you are one of 10 links on a page you are getting linked from you will receive only 10% of the "vote. (these are not exact figures, and only serve as an illustration). So if you take this into consideration a single solitary link to your page from a page with a PR of 2 could be worth more than receiving a link from a PR5 page containing 20 other outgoing links. The same applies the other way around its better to get one on its own link from a PR5 page than 100 links from a pr 1 page. Your page "DOES NOT" leak PR so dont wory about giving out links, links to relevant sites wont affect your PR but will count toward the site you are linking to.

Award more Page Rank to the pages which count!
Digesting this aspect of how page rank works you can begin to understand the importance of internal linking and when to us the "Nofollow" attribute. This is an attribute you can use when creating links in your page, if you use the nofollow attribute the googlebot does not follow that link and doesnot award a "vote" to the page being linked to.

So for example if you had a page or a blog post with 10 links on, 8 of them were pointing towards an Amazon product and two were internal links to your blog each outgoing link would be 10% of the vote meaning your two internal links would only get a total of 20% PR vote from this page in effect "watering down" the quality of the link. If we use the nofollow attribute on the Amazon links this will tell the Googlebot not to follow these links and award the PR vote between the 2 internal links without the nofollow attribute. This means between them your two internal links will get 100% of the vote which will help with the PR of the pages they are pointing to. By nofollowing Amazon this does not affect them in any way as they do not rely on PR but does help you award more potential PR where it maters the next time the Googlebot trawls your site. To find out how to apply the nofollow attribute in your posts check out this post: Nofollow / Dofollow are you following?

Dont be greedy share the link love

It is good to award more PR internally by no-following outgoing links such as commercial shops and social bookmarking sites such as digg etc but you should still share the link love with other sites and blogs which do contain good relative content. Don't be greedy because if you decided to do this to others, when they find out they are more likely to do the same to you.Initally you may wonder which sites you should or should not follow, to help you on your way here is a few pointers:

Dofollow
All of your internal links
Links to other blogs
Links to other websites with quality content (a site you recommend)

Nofollow
Links to sites like amazon
Affiliate links
Paypal buttons
Social bookmarking buttons (see Antisocial Plugin)
Contact forms

So for a quick rundown of how to get more PR for your money

When you can, include internal links within your posts to other of your posts, this will help spread the link-juice/ link-love/ PR-vote etc, so that more of your blogs pages get a better PR. Also it will help visitors when looking for particualr information on your site. Dont put too may links on one page, this will "water down" the link-juice to the pages you are linking to. Make your links decriptive, use relevant Anchor Text this will help Google when people search for a particular phrase, the more descriptive the better!

This is not an exact science but should give you a basic understanding of what to follow and not to follow and how to use internal linking. This wont turn you blog into a PR 6 blog from a PR0 overnight or even at the next PR update but in the long term you will reap the benefits. A little here and a little there can make all the difference.

iphonealikes - what would apple think about this?

After upgrading my phone to a nice shiny MDA Vario ii pocket PC the first thing I did was find out what I could actually do with it, this spawned 2 blog posts, Make your blog phone friendly and, Set up Bluetooth GPS on your phone. It was only a matter of time before I started poking around in the software and looking to see what was available, eventually I found this great forum XDA-Developers with tons of information on various brands of Smart phone and pocket PC. There are some very talented developers and programmers who post on this forum and share their hacks and versions of phone operating systems. The main current trend is to copy the look and functions of the iphone and emulate it on windows mobile as shown in the short video below.

As far as I am aware, enthusiasts have managed to replicate most of the functions of the iphone on pocket PC's and every day someone is coming up with a new hack! Seeing this is decided to try this and flash my ROM (phone memory) with one of these iphonealike operating system hacks. After restarting my phone the thing looked and worked amazingly and all for a free download and a quick flash of the ROM. I don't think apple will be too happy about this but I expect with the speed and open access of the internet they will be helpless to do anything about it! After "upgrading" my phone OS the whole thing is easier to use, you can navigate without the need for a fiddly stylus and it looks great! For other operating systems hacks available for windows mobile check out the XDA-Developers Forum you'll be amazed with what some people have came up with!

Check your inbound links anchor text

If you are new to blogging or building websites in general the first thing you should do is read a little about anchor text and how it can affect Google searches when you are trying to promote your site. Unfortunately we do not always have control over what anchor text is used when people link to our sites and we are relying on the good nature of people to link to us using good descriptive anchor text. Luckely if you use Google webmaster tools you can see what text is being used when people are linking to you. If you have never used web master tools its well worth taking a look at as any analytical information about your website can only be a good thing!

Once you have logged into your account, click on the statistics tab and then navigate to the page analysis link. If you haven't yet registered do it now, I'll wait. Registration is a simple process of submitting your site and then adding a meta tag to the code to prove (verify) that the site is yours. Once you are up and running and have made your way to the "page analysis page" you will be faced with a treasure trove of information. The first box will show you which "Phrases" have been used to link to your site, phrases are quite important as these can constitute long tail keywords which I am going to write about later this month. in the meantime check out this great post over at Dosh Dosh Long tail keywords. At the moment there is no data for my blog for "Phrases" so here is a screenshot of another of my sites The Residual Income Project to show you how it works. Phrases are very important as if people are searching a particular phrase this indicates that they will me more targeted towards your site.

Search_phrase_screenshot_long_tail_keywords

To the bottom right of the page you will also be able to see the top 100 keywords used to link to your site as shown on the screen shot below.

incoming anchor text schreenshot

Incoming Links

As you can the top two most used anchor text is name which is pretty useless unless someone is searching for Andy Coates but the next three are Earn Money Online. This is excellent as around 20,000 people search for "earn money online" each month but on the downside I'm competing against around 12million other results. This is OK as the old saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a day" so I'm expecting over the next 12 month I can climb that list though its never my intention to get to the top. Continuing down the list of incoming anchor text will give you a general idea of how others see your site depending on the relevant anchor text.

Not only can you see how your site is being linked to but you can also see where you need to improve depending on which direction you are taking your blog. I am going to be writing more articles on investing so I would like to try and get the anchor text investing, or investment ideas as part of some of my incoming link. Overal this is a great free tool which you can glean a load of information from.

Whats going on with Kontera?

Lately I have noticed the amount of keywords which has been linked to in my text by Kontera has been coming less and less. If you don't know what Kontera is here is a quick rundown. Kontera is a contextual advertising program which once you have signed up and embedded the code in your blog certain advert relevant keywords are double underlined by Kontera. Each time someone clicks on one of these links you are paid a few cents for the click and advertising on your blog.

Earnings from Kontera hasn't been great when you compare it to the amount of traffic my blog has been getting, Adsense earnings have slowly being going up whilst Kontera earnings have been quite frankly mediocre. Looking around the blogosphere I've seen a few posts popping up now and again about Kontera and the low earnings compared to other schemes. There could be several reasons for the slow decline in the number of links being displayed, advertisers drying up, different algorithms being used or even not being able match keywords to content but I guess its impossible to know we can only speculate. Ive used Kontera for just over a month and have mad money from it from day one but now after my traffic has more than doubled I am still earning the same amount per day now as I was a month ago, go figure!

Amazon to the rescue?

Recently Amazon have begun their own contextual linking advertising scheme, the implementation works exactly the same as Kontera by adding a piece of code into your script and it links keywords to products. The main difference is Amazon's scheme is a pay per action program meaning you will only earn money if a reader actually buys something form Amazon through one of your links. This is great for product review sites but probably not for your average blog though next time I do review a product I may implement it and see how it go as I already link to products manually through amazon associates. Just for experimentation purposes I'm going to use the Amazon Context links code in this post to see how it looks (dashed underlined links) and to make sure it works OK as there has been talk of teething problems with the script.

Alternative to Kontera?

Doing a quick search for Kontera alternatives brings up a paradox of results, when I do a Google search for "Kontera alternatives" the alternative which comes up in the results is Kontera, lol! There are alternatives on the market such as Intellitext which i have just signed up for and will hopeful be trying out in the next few days so I have something to compare Kontera with. Intellitext is not the only alternative and I'll be looking more in depth at the others next week, until then watch this space!
