Pixel Mapping with VVVV

Today I had the opportunity to get my hands on some Pixelline 1044, "MASSIVE thanks to Stage Electrics Tynside" which enabled me to work on a patch i had written in vvvv specificaly for Pixelmapping media to these fixtures. The setup is relatively simple if you know your way arround vvvv and have the right gear. I was using my ASUS G1S laptop running Vista through my Enttec USB Pro DMX Dongle, which proved to be a great compact setup although I expect i will upgrade my DMX interface for a multi I/O Ethernet version relatively soon.

The setup was really easy, the hardest thing was navigating through the Pixelline menu's but once all of the fixtures were setup, addressed and given DMX, everything worked perfectly! Here are a few pictures and videos of it in action.

The bouncing blobs, rotating line and text were all, also generated within vvvv too. Mapping video live across these does not look good due to the way the pixel color translates, although not impossible you would need allot of color correction and tweaking as well as being selective about only choosing high contrast and brightly video. The best media to put through something like Pixelline, Colorweb, Shcnick-Schnack is generally brightly colored, contrasting generated media.

I Apologize for the low video quality!

VVVV --- ;-)

VVVVideo Warping

A few weeks ago I stumbled across a program called VVVV developed by meso and was instantly hooked when i found out the capabilities of what this program could do. V4 is commonly referred to as a multipurpose took kit for real time video synthesis which can do much much more. In essence V4 allows you to take one type of data, maybe an infrared camera, manipulate that data and output it however you like, maybe by playing sounds, turning on lights, moving objects, anything you like. As a stand alone program V4, when programed right can create some stunning visuals for VJ'ing or installations which can be manipulated in real time and react to the music or environment, a superb master of this craft is Sanch who has some great examples and videos on his website.

Initially when you see VVVV, (or V4 which is allot easier to say) you would be forgiven for saying out loud, "What the F**K", is it is not really intuitive at first, but with a bit of time (be prepeared to put the effort in here) it all begins to make beautiful sense.

After doing allot of "playing" and checking out the different patches (In V4 they're called patches, not programs) i decided i wanted to create a patch which would allow me to warp video which would allow me to project a square image onto a curved surface and then correct the image so the would be uniform again. Just in case you didn't know, when you project onto any surface which isn't flat such as a column, the image becomes warped due to the fact that the further the projected light has to travel before hitting the projection surface the larger area it will cover. This means that if you were to project onto a column the part of the image closer to the projector (the middle) would appear "pinched" and the outside of the image would appear splayed. By stretching and squeezing the image at certain pints you can "re-correct" this deformation so you get a nice even image wrapped around one half of a column.

Below is a few screen shots of the patch i used, this is a very early version, the new one includes multiple video switching and some nice keyboard shortcuts which would be handy if you were using this in a live situation.

This is a shot of the basic patch with the inspector and a render (the preview monitor open)

vvvv warped image projecting onto a curved surface

Above is an example of a warped video for projecting onto a vertically linear concave surface, by pinching the center of the image, when it is projected onto a curved surface where the center is a longer distance from the projector than the outsides, the center of the image will be "stretched" due to the distance, creating a uniform image.

vvvv warped image projecting onto a curved surface

Here is a rough example of how you would warp an image if you were projecting directly onto a corner surface such as a four sided pillar, this would create two uniform squares on two sides of the pillar using only one projector.

Once I get some photos of this in action i will post some corresponding examples of this technique in action. Currently i am working on a new type of protocol for mapping, video/images to a custom built LED wall. If you use V4 and would like to chat please get in contact.

Google Search techniques, how to find what your looking for!

Have you ever found your self being frustrated whilst searching on Google for something which you know exists but you cant possibly seem to find again? Google does its bet to try and bring you the most relevant results for a basic keyword/phrase but sometimes thats not enough, to improve your searching try these simple little search tricks and 99.99% of the time you will be able to find what you are looking for. Not only will you find what you are looking for but you will save tons of time and increase you productivity! Follow these simple easy to remember techniques and they will be with you forever!

  • "Quotation marks" - If you are looking for an exact phrase, surround you phrase in quotation marks, this tells Google that you want results which contain this exact phrase.
  • AND - If you what your results to return all of the keywords used put an AND (in capitals) between each word. e,g search: andy AND coates AND money, this will return any documents containing all of these keywords
  • OR - This is the same as above but gives the search engine a choice of this OR that. e.g search: andy AND coates OR money OR magic
  • NOT - again, same as the previous examples but this operator excludes the particular word from a search to help narrow your results.

There are may other operators you can use but its probably quite rare that you will need these as you will probably find what you are looking for using the above search tools. Sometimes whilst searching the results will return a huge page full of text which would take hours to read through whilst trying to find what your looking for. Heres a very under-used technique to search through a huge amount of text to narrow down your search. This is already built into you browser whether you use Firefox or IE and is the Ctrl + F on you keyboard and in IE it will bring up a search box and in Firefox it will open a small search tool bar at the bottom of you browser (nice!).

Firefox:

Internet Explorer:

From here just type the text your looking for and it will search the document for hat keyword or phrase beginning at the top and working the way down the page, easy peazy and it will save you tons of time! For another productivity tip take a look at my post sleep your way to success or even better try searching for it using you new found search techniques.

How to earn money online!

To earn money online there are several different ways to do this and virtually anyone willing to dedicate a small amount of their time to the cause each day can begin to make money! Just like anything the amount of money you make is proportional to the amount of work you put in. The same goes for any cash you invest online, the higher the risk the bigger the potential reward could be but at the same time you could lose some ore even all of your initial investment. So to kick things off I will begin with the easiest but lowest paying first progressing onto the hardest with higher potential payouts!

Get paid for surfing the internet

This is one of the easiest ways to earn money online, Agloco is a company who will pay you a percentage of their advertising income whilst you surf the internet. The whole process is pretty straight forward and does not affect your web browsing in any way, all you need to do is Sign Up for an account, download the "Viewbar" and continue surfing the internet. The toolbar displays tiny text ads at the bottom of you page and each hour you surf is logged by Agloco, once the company has calculated the profit form the advertising revenue you will be paid a share depending on the amount of hours you have accumulated. Check it out HERE

Get paid for clicking on adverts

This is a very slow way to earn money online though handled correctly it can net a reasonable income. Basically you sign up for an account with one of the 100's of company's offering "Paid to Click" accounts, click on the adverts you receive via email or on the particular websites each day and you will be paid a TINY amount for each click! The only way to make any reasonable money from this is to only sign up with PTC sites who offer referral schemes so this means for each person who joins these sites through YOUR referral link, you will receive money for each of their clicks! So to make money without the effort you need to get about at least 99 people to sign up through your referral code so they do 99% of the clicking. To try these out check out these schemes Adbux (pays 1 cent per click) Archer Fish

Get Paid For Completing Surveys

This is pretty straight forward but can be quite time consuming and the payouts tend to be quite low. There are many sites out there offering to pay you for completing surveys so instead of giving a direct link its best doing a Google search for your country. Most tend to offer gift vouchers rather than cold hard cash but sometimes you can get some good offers though these usually get snapped up pretty quickly!

Get paid for displaying adverts on your website

This is where you can begin to earn some reasonable money, your not going to get rich overnight unless you win the lottery but it is a great place to begin! First of all you need a website, you can choose one for the free hosted options such as Wordpress or Blogger but if you are serious about making a reasonable amount of cash on the internet I'd recommend getting some web hosting and running a self hosted blog. I use Streamline for hosting and Wordpress as my blogging platform which has been a superb combination, this gives me total control over my site and advertisers will take you more seriously when you have your own domain name!

Money4Banners
On particular offer which I love is from Money4Banners where you can get paid £10 just for signing up and £5 each month just for displaying 3 banner adverts on your website! Also to make more money from Money for banners check out this post

Text Link Ads
Another similar but different!? offer is by Text link Ads, you get paid a flat monthly fee for displaying a text link on your website. The qualifying process is a little harder than Money4Banners as you need a reasonably good Alexa Rating and the adverts are priced depending on this and your sites pagerank it may take a while to get your site qualified though its well worth the persistence and effort if your serious about making money online. To sign up and submit you site to Text link Ads click here.

AdSense
One of the most popular methods for monetizing your website is signing up for a Google AdSense account and displaying adverts on your website. Each time one of the adverts which you display on your website is clicked you are paid a percentage of the advertising fee. All you need to do is sign up for an AdSense account and start displaying adverts on your website.

AdSense income relies on getting allot of traffic to your website which you can slowly build up over a period of several week/months of blogging, in essence the more targeted traffic to you blog the more potential AdSense earnings. Check out my post How to profit from AdSense for a more in depth look!

This is just a quick look and a few ideas about how you can make money online, this is not a get rich quick scheme but if you contribute a small amount of your time each day to making money online you can make a substantial income in the long term to find out about the benefits of long term blogging read my post The importance of persistence in blogging success .
